Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview :
This position exists within the Compliance and Enforcement Branch, Office of Air Quality of the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. Name reports to the Compliance Section Chief.
The purpose of the position is to effectively use all compliance and enforcement tools and resources available to improve air quality in our state by ensuring that all air pollution sources comply with all state and federal air pollution control laws, rules and permits while incorporating innovative voluntary compliance and pollution prevention approaches with the regulated community.
Name works as an environmental intern on compliance and enforcement-related projects supporting the branch. Name will be researching and preparing various reports for the supervisor, generating and maintaining data, conducting inspections, typing documents/maintaining files, preparing and filing of various documents, responding to agency requests for reports and information about various compliance and enforcement activities. Name coordinates with various companies and IDEM inspectors, enforcement case managers, administrative staff, and other professional staff in the branch and office.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

To be eligible for an internship, applicants must be enrolled as undergraduates or graduates in an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed one year of undergraduate education at the start of the internship.
